All of the world’s high quality jade comes from Kachin. A single unpolished stone of the right color sells for millions of Euros. Before the Kachin controlled most of this jade market and the money was spread around due to the Kachin clan system.
Today the Burmese army controls most of the jade business and the Junta elite get filthy rich off jade money and spend most of the rest on arms to further their human rights violations and war crimes.
The US government in 2008 imposed a ban on all jade from Burma and also banned the ruling generals and their families who were profiting from it from entering the US. The bill (HR3890) often called the Burma Jade Act was ratified by the US Senate unanimously. It was a very positive act, however still today it is not in 100% enforcement.
